The Bradfield Waifs made it through the second round of the Cricketer Cup hosting Stowe Templars on Pit. The Templars won the toss and elected to bat. Some tight bowling on show from Tom Ettridge and Charlie Gwynn ensured the batting side didn't run away in the opening powerplay. It too until the 16th over for Arthur Mills, making his debut, to break the deadlock and pick up the first of hopefully many wickets for the Waifs. Some more tight bowling and another display of superb team fielding ensured The Templars never ran away from The Waifs. Bowling figures for the side are below...
Tom Ettridge 10-3-21-1
Charlie Gwynn 10-2-43-3
Arthur Mills 8-1-37-1
Oli Birts 10-0-32-3
Monty McKenzie 6-0-33-0
Hugo Darby 5.2-0-22-2
Fresh from a little break due to injury Sheridon Gumbs opened up and looked as assured as he did last year in the semi-final at Cheltenham to set about making a sizeable dent into the run chase. Gumbs scored 51 from 68 balls with 8x4s, one slog sweep attempt too many saw the back of Sheridon for the Templars but with 88 on the board for the opening pair. Imran Malik again went about his business scoring 39 from 57 balls with 5x4s before being run-out in the 23rd over. Hugo Darby came and went and couldn't replicate his innings from the last round but this did allow for Joe Sheldon and Charlie Gwynn to put on 76 for the 4th wicket together before the latter was out caught after hitting 3x4s and 2x6s in his 33. Joe Sheldon finished not out on 37 with 5x4s alongside Arthur Mills with 5 from 3 ball, 1x4.
This Sunday 9th July brings Stowe Templars to Pit in the second round who last played one other in the 2016 quarter-final where Tonbrige won by 49 runs. That game featured a certain Zak Crawley who opened the innings and blasted 87 as Tonbridge made 225 from their reduced 35 overs. Bradfield lost a steady stream of wickets with Nick Farr making 54 opening the innings and contributions from Hamza Riazuddin (31), Michael Payne (26) and Craig Williams (23).
Imran Malik, Arthur Mills and Monty McKenzie are unfortunately not available this weekend. They are replaced by recent leavers Zach Lion-Cachet and Kishore Naha alongside the verteran Duncan Irens. Sam Negus is back to take the gloves in place of Craig Williams. Hopefully The Waifs can go another step in the 2023 competition and Sunday holds for another exciting day at the end of Waifs Week on Pit.
