Dr. Colin Meanock, MD, FRCR
1953 – 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Colin Meanock, MD, FRCR, who died at home on June 20, 2025, at the age of 72, surrounded by his family.
Colin leaves behind his beloved wife Anna, five children, and eleven grandchildren.
Colin joined Bradfield College in 1966 and after leaving in 1971, Colin began his medical training at the Middlesex Hospital. In 1973, he married Anna Fletcher, whose brother David had also attended Bradfield. Following qualification, Colin held a succession of house jobs and registrar positions and then went on to obtain an MD for his research into sleep apnea while working at King Edward VII Hospital in Midhurst, where he had the rare privilege of having his own research laboratory.
During this period, as his young family grew, Colin made the decision to train as a Radiologist. In 1987, he became a Consultant at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, a post he held with dedication until his retirement in 2018.
Colin and Anna raised their five children on a farm in West Sussex, not far from extended family - a place filled with cousins, siblings, grandparents, and lifelong memories. For over three decades, Colin commuted 100 miles daily between home and hospital. It says a lot that he felt both destinations were worth the effort.
On the farm, Colin found balance, splitting his time between a demanding medical career and hands-on land maintenance involving two much-loved tractors, a fleet of lawnmowers, and the rhythms of country life. Upon retirement, he devoted himself full-time to the land, creating a beautiful haven where his children and grandchildren could enjoy the peace and pleasures of rural life. He particularly enjoyed the big Sunday lunches, tractor rides for the grandchildren, and the joy of becoming a skilled bread baker, family cook and often full time childminder.
A lifelong reader, Colin built a remarkable library - part inherited, part self-curated - spanning everything from Homer to Evelyn Waugh. His mind was always open to new ideas. Music and Art enriched his life in quiet but profound ways.
Colin is remembered by all who knew him for his empathy, patience, compassion and extraordinary kindness coupled with a very dry sense of humour. He was also well known for his wonderfully irreverent attitude towards authority and his impatience towards bureaucracy.
He was greatly loved and is deeply missed.
Funeral will be held on July 10th at 2:00pm at St Peter ad Vincula in Wisborough Green, West Sussex
