On Sunday 28 June, our 1st XI traveled to Marlborough for a high-stakes second-round knockout clash..
Bowling first on a true deck, the Waifs put on a resilient display to bowl Marlborough out for 225. Arthur Mills (H 17-22) was completely supreme, ripping through the host's middle order to finish with phenomenal figures of 4 for 35, while skipper Charlie Gwynn (F 12-17) bowled with his trademark accuracy to take 3 for 50.
The chase was a nerve-shredding affair built on excellent partnerships. Tournament debutant Ethan Ramsay (D 20-25) showed maturity well beyond his years to make a vital 41, anchoring two key 50-run stands: first alongside Olly Boulton (D 20-25) and then with Arthur Mills. Mills batted superbly throughout the middle overs, compiling a crucial 53 to keep the Waifs firmly on track.
As the match approached its climax, Sam Negus (D 17-22) and Tom Ettridge (H 14-19) came together for a clutch 45-run partnership. Tom Ettridge gave the spectators a couple of heart attacks after being dropped twice during his stint, but the nerves were finally settled when Sam Negus dispatched a generous full toss for the winning runs, securing a famous 2-wicket victory at 226 for 8.
