Bradfield Waifs and Strays play at Commem

It was a weekend of immense pride and historic milestones  as the Strays joined the Waifs to play the College 1st XI Girls and Boys teams at commem...

Strays vs Bradfield College

Saturday 27th June will officially go down in the club's history books as our newly launched women's section, The Strays, took the field for their first official match. Playing on Pit for Commem Day, the team faced a well-drilled Bradfield College side.

The College batted first, posting a competitive 145 for 2 from their overs. Bo Lee (M 20-23) was the standout performer with the ball, delivering a highly disciplined spell to claim excellent figures of 2 for 20. In the reply, the Strays applied themselves beautifully against a tough attack to finish on 97 for 5. Alice Robbins anchored the innings with a brilliant, technically composed 29, with Ava Lee (M 19-22) chipping in with a resilient 13. While the result went to the hosts, it was a magnificent debut that sets a fantastic foundation for the future of the Strays.

Waifs vs Bradfield College

Immediately following the women's match, our men's T20 XI stepped up to contest the traditional Commem fixture, running out victorious by 17 runs.

Opting to bat, the Waifs posted a competitive 130 for 5, anchored by a superb, aggressive unbeaten 35* from Charlie Threshie (G 19-14) and a fluent 24 from Ted Paice(A 20-25). Defending a moderate total, our bowlers executed their plans to absolute perfection. Harry Schofield blew the top order away with an astonishing, match-winning spell of 3 wickets for just 8 runs. Ted Paice capped off an excellent all-round display with 2 for 24 as the College were bowled out for 113, ensuring the bragging rights remained firmly with the common room veterans.

George Bryans (G 07-12)

Awards Ceremony

As a new initiative the Waifs and Strays also presented some awards to the College players; recent leaver Emma MacEwen (K 21-26) was awarded the Lauren Bell Strays Cup and Tom Sinclair (D 21-26) the Gus Atkinson Waifs Cup whilst Wilson (D) and Sophie (I) were presented 'Spirit of the Waifs' and 'Spirit of the Strays Cup' respectively.

The warmth that exists between the College and alumni community is tangible and of course the overall winner is the Bradfieldian cricketing community.

The Waifs also went on to win the next round of the Cricketer Cup in their match played the next day, see separate article.
