Bryan Whalley (E 44-48) passed away on the 10th July 2026, aged 95.
Bryan attended Bradfield College from September 1944 until December 1948, where he was a member of E House under Housemaster Leslie Price. He remembered staying an extra term at the College with no fixed academic aims, so the Headmaster John Hills asked him to help create a new path from E House to the Sanatorium to help prepare him for service in the army. During his time at the College, he was a member of the 1st XI Football team and earned his football colours, often playing in goal. He also played cricket and squash and served as a School Prefect.
Bryan was a great friend of John Bodie (C 44-48) and remembered an interhouse cricket match when John slogged a cricket ball as hard as he could towards Bryan on the boundary referring to him as a “dropper” but on this occasion he caught the ball thus depriving John of his 6 runs!
Following Bradfield, Bryan was commissioned into the Coldstream Guards, serving as a Second Lieutenant between 1948 and 1950. He later continued his military involvement with the Territorial Army and, according to the Bradfield Register of Boys, attained the rank of Major with the Royal Fusiliers. He later had a career as a produce broker and as Master of World Traders.
Bryan was an active member of the Bradfield Society, playing OB Football with the Veterans team and staying in touch with us and other Bradfieldians all his life.
