Following our Armistice Centenary Remembrance Sunday Service at Bradfield on 11 November 2018 and the publication of our commemorative brochure for the day, we were thrilled when a copy of the brochure was passed to a member of staff at our local primary school. By chance, the lady is related to Old Bradfieldian and Lieutenant George Dudley Austin Black who was at Bradfield College from Sept 1910 until June 1914 and was killed at Vimy Ridge on 21 June 1916 while fighting with the 22nd Royal Fusiliers Regiment.

What the family did not know was that the original battlefield grave marker was given to Bradfield many years ago and is preserved at the College. They were delighted to hear that it is one of the battlefield crosses in our college collection. As a great uncle Dudley is fondly remembered from his letters from the front, the letters to his family from his regimental colleagues and superiors after his death, his medals and photographs of his time at Bradfield in the Officer Training Corps.

Bradfield is pleased to be a part of this family's history. We are also thrilled to be able to share the cross with those family members who did not know of its existence and its preservation as part of our special battlefield cross collection at Bradfield.
