Thank you to Bradfieldian Richard Benyon (H 74-78) for his recent donation to the College Archive of a wonderful piece of Bradfieldiana titled "Viro Clarissimo" which translates as 'to the most famous man'.
It is a letter written in Latin by Senior Prefect Robert Sopwith (H 53-58) sent via the Headmaster, with his knowledge and agreement indicating some collusion too. It was addressed to Sir Henry Benyon (known as Harry), who was then Warden of Bradfield (1946-59) to mark the award of his Baronetcy or Insignia of the Equestrian Order in 1958 asking if the pupils could have a day's holiday to celebrate.
The full translation of the letter can be seen below:
Robert remembers when the Warden visited the college around this time being told to "steer him through the Hollowell-Gardiner exhibition fairly swiftly since it would certainly include taxidermy or antlers from Englefield Park, indicating trespass if not actual poaching. Benyon did laughingly make some comment as I hurried him through."
