Our year 10 music scholars and exhibitioners recently enjoyed a trip to Cadogan Hall to hear the Academy of St Martin in the Field. We are incredibly lucky to have these world class ensembles and venues on our doorstep and also to benefit from funding from the Richard Osborne Music Trips Fund established by John Lyon (C 65-69). John set up the fund in honour of a master who encouraged his enthusiasm for music and to allow current Bradfieldians who love music to benefit from high quality musical experience during their time at the college. Shell Music Scholar, Acacia (K) prepared this report about the visit;
This January, a few lucky pupils were taken to experience an incredible Classical concert at the Cadogan Hall, hosting the Academy of St Martin in the Fields (orchestra) and their Music Director, virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell for a programme featuring Brahms’ magnificent Violin Concerto, showcasing some of Brahms’ richest writing, and Schumann’s vibrant, energetic and joyful ‘Spring’ Symphony No. 1, both directed by Joshua from the violin.
The venue was impressive and welcoming, with excellent acoustics that made the orchestra and solo violin sound clear and powerful. The performance itself was outstanding. The orchestra played with precision and unity, carefully controlling dynamics and timing. Joshua Bell, as soloist and director, was captivating. His violin playing was very expressive and it was fascinating to watch how he led the orchestra while performing. I particularly enjoyed the way he conveyed emotion through his body language, making the music feel alive and engaging.
‘it was an inspiring experience that increased my appreciation for music and showed me the dedication and skill required to perform at a professional level’
I am very appreciative that Bradfield organises wonderful trips like this and many many thanks to John Lyon (C 65-69) and the Richard Osborne Music Trips Fund.
