On Saturday and Sunday 8 - 9 May the Walker Cup Seminole 2021 was played at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Florida. The US held a slim lead over Great Britiain and Ireland to win the 2021 Cup 14-12.
The biennial Walker Cup is a 10-man amateur golf team competition contested by the United Sates of America and Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I). It is golf's oldest international match pre-dating the Ryder Cup which was first played in 1927, by 5 years. The silver Walker Cup was commissioned by Tiffany & Co in 1921.
This is the first time that OB Angus Flanagan (H 12-17) has played in this match and he represented St George's Hill Golf Club in England in the team drawn from all around the British Isles. Angus is currently studying at the University of of Minnesota. In the Saturday foursomes, Angus was paired with Jack Bolton and they won against Stewart Hagestad and William Mous. See a great video of Angus and his 18th hole put to win one of his singles matches at the Cup here
He is not however, the first Bradfieldian to play in the Walker Cup. Interestingly, OB Brian Chapman (H 48-53) played in the 1961 Walker Cup and more details about this event can be found online here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1961_Walker_Cup
At the time of Chapman's play, the GB&I team had at least 4 public school golfers (Chapman – Bradfield; Christmas – Charterhouse; Lunt – Uppingham; Blair – Harrow). There were some very fine amateur golfers in that team – Bonallack and Carr were legends of the game. Brian Chapman played against both Deane Beman who turned Pro and for many years ran the USPGA and Jack Nicklaus, arguably the greatest player ever. A few other details about the players of note at that time: Don Cherry, who, as well as being a top golfer, was also a songwriter, including several hit singles in the late 1950s and Charles Coe was probably the best post-war US amateur golfer, even finishing 2nd in the 1961 Masters behind Gary Player.
The quality of amateur golf in the Walker Cup is pretty special, so Angus is in rarified company. Grateful thanks to member of the College SCR Trevor Kidson for finding this information on Wikipedia and sharing his find.
