Adam Reed (H 97-02) is climbing Kilimanjaro this year to raise funds for the LAS charity and MS Society having started volunteering as a Community First Responder in Wimbledon in the last year. Adam developed his interest in supporting charities whilst at Bradfield where he was a member of Charity Soc, read Adam's story below...
Adam has recently joined as a volunteer community first responder for the London Ambulance Service. Community First Responders are clinically-trained volunteers attending on call from their homes and responding to calls in their own car. They are often first-on-scene when someone rings 999 for help, providing life-saving care and remaining with patients and families until an ambulance arrives.
After starting volunteering, he wanted to do more to provide lifesaving equipment, free CPR training, and look after the paramedics and call handlers responding to stressful emergencies. His decision? Climb Kilimanjaro! This September, Adam will be climbing the 5,895m (19,340ft) to reach the summit of Africa's highest mountain.
“This is a challenge that means a lot to me. I'm taking on Kili to raise funds for the London Ambulance Charity and MS Society in honour of my late father. I also want to give back to the local guides and porters who make every climb possible so I've been collecting quality outdoor gear from my friends, and colleagues in the film industry to donate directly to them. Amazingly, I've already reached the target - 23 kg of kit!”
Adam is no stranger to pushing his limits. Since taking up running for his wellbeing and mental health in 2019, he has tackled marathons every year and conquered Ironman Frankfurt in 2024—a feat demanding immense grit and determination. This year, despite battling back from injury, Adam is fired up to lace up his trainers once more, ready to pound the pavements of SW19 and take on the rugged mountain trails as part of his intense training regime.
This won't be his first African mountain summit either! Having conquered Mt Toubkal in Morocco with a College expedition in 2011, having spent 9 days in the High Atlas mountains to acclimatise alongside Mr Keeley and Mr Burgess.
Jess Burgess, Head of London Ambulance Charity, commented, “Adam's commitment to saving lives in London is remarkable! Not only is he volunteering his own time and skills to help patients, he's going over and above to challenge himself and fundraise for two incredible causes. We truly appreciate his efforts and look forward to supporting his training and completion of his ascent.”
