"One man in his time plays many parts"

We are sorry to learn of the death in South Africa of Jeremy Peter Wingfield Heale (A 50-55) most recently known as Jay. During his time at Bradfield he was involved in the Choir, Greek Play, a House Prefect, Hockey and the Shakespeare Society.

He had in recent years been in touch with the Development Office several times most recently enjoying the Carol Concert which was shared online during the Covid restrictions of 2020 and of which he said "What a joy. Because South Africa is as tightly restricted as England this Christmas, I watched your Carol Service on my computer – by myself, in my one-room retirement home unit. But I was not alone. I was back at Bradfield, in the company of joyous youthful singers. (I was in the choir for most of my first two years and I’m still proud of that.) Thank you all for creating it – and for allowing us around the world to join you."

His obituary in The Times reads:

HEALE Jeremy Peter Wingfield passed away in hospital in Hermanus, South Africa, after a short illness, on 1st November 2021, aged 84. Author, teacher and erstwhile chairman of the IBBY Hans Christian Andersen committee, he promoted children’s literature and reading in South Africa and worldwide. Deputy head at Somerset House Prep School for many years. Will be greatly missed by past pupils, his many friends and his family in South Africa and the UK. “One man in his time plays many parts.” RIP Jay.
